The Back Story

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Jacques Cousteau. I loved the idea of discovering things. But really, what I figured out later was the I loved to learn. I loved to explore. And then I wanted to share that knowledge. When I graduated from college, I went to Taiwan to teach English for 3 years. In all, I spent 5 years in Greater China teaching and doing business. Those experiences changed my life forever.

While I was in China, I learned there were plenty of places to learn conversational English but China was no place to learn technical terms in English – such as those needed on a worksite. For example, where could a Chinese person go to learn proper tensioning and torqueing on a flange? Native Chinese workers and English-speaking expatriates were struggling to communicate with each other on technical issues and tasks at multi-billion dollar construction projects. Communicating such information effectively is also paramount to safety. So I felt this lack of communication could also be a contributing factor to unnecessary workplace accidents.

Coming back to the States, I found similar issues. Workers were being hired out of fast food restaurants with little to no technical knowledge. The issue is one of training vital domain knowledge, not language. This was the driving force behind starting this company.

We serve the salt of the earth

When people ask me why I do what I do, I tell them I’m passionate about the people who work with their hands, the people in our blue-collar industries across America, the salt of the earth people who serve us with honor and integrity. It has been since day one – and always will be – my mission to serve them back. That’s what gets me out of bed every morning: helping educate these good people about safety in order to avoid accidents that devastate families. I hope to further their knowledge and confidence. I want to help them best do the jobs they are proud to do.
